This course will be available online (via your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer) and may be taken at your leisure in conjunction with the dates and times listed above. Courses will range from 8-12 modules, with each module being roughly 30-90 minutes long. At the end of each module, students will need to pass a quiz to move forward. This course will cover NFHS Rules and Mechanics. The listed instructor will be available to help answer any questions that you may have. Please pay attention to the instructor’s preferred communication method. Instructors may offer additional educational sessions, online or in-person, which may be beneficial, but these are all strictly optional.
What is expected of you:
It is expected that each student be proficient in reading and writing. Officials may have to run and be engaged in strenuous physical activity; therefore, you should be ambulatory and have the necessary level of physical fitness required for that sport. You are expected to complete each module. You will be required to pay an instructional fee; this fee covers the cost of the course, rulebooks, and insurance for the year. You will be required to be proficient in mechanics. You will also be required to receive at least 75% on two written, final exams: one on rules, one on OHSAA regulations and in some sports, a third exam on mechanics. After the course and before your first game assignment, it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED that you attend an on-field/on-court clinic. OHSAA District Administrators will reach out to you following the course to connect you with a Local Officials Association in your area who will assist with this on-field/on-court experience. Finally, you will be expected to purchase your own equipment and uniform.
Concussion Training
All perspective officials must complete this training and add the certification to their myOHSAA profile to receive their permit number as this is required by the OHSAA and is State Law in Ohio. Concussion certification is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.
Refund policy
The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) does not provide refunds for permit fees unless authorized by the appropriate OHSAA administrator except when based on proof of extraordinary circumstances. Fees for officiating classes may be refunded prior to the first day of class. After the first day of class no refund will be issued except for extraordinary circumstances. There will be a $20 refund charge fee for each refund processed by the OHSAA.
